Best ESO Tank Class 2026 - Tank Tier List
This ESO Tank Tier List compares the 7 Pure Class Tanks, Subclass Tank, and Werewolf Tank across Dungeons, Trials, and Beginner rankings.
Warden is the best Tank class for Dungeons if your group does not already have a Warden Healer. Trials have no single best Tank because the other Tank and two Healers change what the group needs. Nightblade, Dragonknight, Sorcerer, and Subclass Tank are the best choices for beginners.
Subclass Tank does not mean a specific combination. It means utilizing Subclassing and switching to the stuff you need for a specific fight.
Dungeon Ranking
This ranking considers both 1 Tank + 1 Healer + 2 DD and 1 Tank + 3 DD groups.
Warden is simply the best Dungeon Tank if the group does not already have a Warden Healer. It provides
Major Heroism,
Major Brittle, AoE
Major Resolve, and
Minor Toughness. That is a crazy amount of group support compared to other classes.
Dragonknight and Subclass Tank end up in A Tier because both provide strong offensive and defensive group support. Subclass Tank can provide
Major Vulnerability from
Glacial Colossus while also giving the group AoE
Major Resolve with
Expansive Frost Cloak. Dragonknight provides a similar DPS boost while also giving the group
Major Protection through
Lead From the Front.
Trial Ranking
These rankings are for Veteran and Hard Mode PUGs, not organized groups.
Trials usually have two Healers and a second Tank, so some group buffs and defensive tools may already be covered. What is good depends on the full group composition, so it is impossible to choose one superior Tank class. I could come up with 100 different "but what if" situations where another class is better instead.
Even if a group with a Warden Tank and Arcanist Healer is marginally better, another group can provide similar stuff with an Arcanist Tank and Warden Healer. If there is no Arcanist Healer, the Arcanist Tank can use
Ink-Scribe's Verve itself. Class choice here is about covering gaps in the group. That is why so many classes are in S Tier. They are extremely good as long as they cover something the group is missing.
Templar provides the unique 300 Weapon and Spell Damage buff from
Bright Harbinger. Nightblade provides the 5% damage taken increase from
Cutthroat's Focus.
Beginner Ranking
Beginner rankings prioritize sustain and survival.
Nightblade, Dragonknight, Sorcerer, and Subclass Tank are all S Tier choices for beginners.
Nightblade is S Tier because
Siphoning Attacks trivializes sustain. It lets you get away with permablocking to a crazy degree, so you can basically just hold Block all the time. Subclass Tank can also access
Siphoning Attacks.
Dragonknight also has access to an insanely good sustain tool,
Heart of Flame. Sorcerer has massive damage shields from
Hardened Ward and
Calculated Defense, plus sustain from
Conservation of Energy.

FAQ
There is no such thing. A tank's job requires a variety of situational tools. The correct build changes depending on the content, but also on your group and even how experienced your group is.
There is no single best class. Warden provides significantly more group support than other classes in Dungeons, assuming you don't already have a Warden Healer. But in Trials, where you will most likely have 2 Healers and another Tank, it's impossible to choose one best class. All classes can tank, and the most important thing is avoiding overlap and filling the gaps in your team's composition.
Nightblade, Dragonknight, Sorcerer, and Subclass Tank are all S Tier choices for beginners. Nightblade and Subclass Tank can access
Siphoning Attacks, while Dragonknight has an insanely good sustain tool in
Heart of Flame. Sorcerer has massive damage shields from
Hardened Ward and
Calculated Defense, plus sustain from
Conservation of Energy.
