How Critical Damage Works in ESO

Every character in ESO starts with a base 50% Critical Damage bonus. When you land a critical hit, your damage is multiplied by 1 + your total Critical Damage. So at 50% base, a crit does 1.5x damage. Every source of Critical Damage - buffs like Major Force, gear sets, class passives, champion points - stacks additively on top of that 50% base. Since Update 32 (Deadlands), Critical Damage is hard capped at 125%. Anything beyond that is wasted.

How Critical Chance Works in ESO

Critical Chance in ESO comes from a stat called Critical Rating. Divide your rating by 21,918 to get your crit chance percentage. Every character starts with a base 10% Critical Chance regardless of gear or stats. Sources like the Thief Mundus, weapon traits like Precise, armor passives, and gear sets all add Critical Rating (or flat crit chance in some cases) on top of that base. You can check your current Critical Chance in the character sheet under Advanced Stats. There is no hard cap on Critical Chance, but since it's a percentage, it naturally caps at 100%.

FAQ

How does crit damage work in ESO?

Critical damage in ESO starts at a base of 50%, meaning critical hits deal 150% of normal damage. You can increase this through buffs like Major and Minor Force, gear sets, class passives, champion points, and racial bonuses. There is a hard cap of 125% critical damage, introduced in Update 32, meaning critical hits can deal at most 225% of normal damage.

How is crit chance calculated in ESO?

All characters start with a base 10% critical chance. On top of that, crit rating from gear, sets, and buffs is converted to a percentage by dividing by 21,918. For example, 1,096 crit rating gives roughly 5% crit chance. Buffs like Major Prophecy/Savagery add a flat 12% directly. There is no hard cap on critical chance - you can reach 100%.

What is a good crit rate in ESO?

There is no single target number for crit chance in ESO. The value of crit chance depends on your current crit damage, group buffs, and the rest of your stats. Crit chance has diminishing returns - the more you have, the less each additional point is worth. However, higher crit damage counteracts this by making each critical hit more valuable. Use this calculator to see how much total DPS each point of crit chance is actually worth for your specific build.

Is crit damage better than crit chance?

Neither is universally better - it depends on your current stats and group setup. Adding crit damage is worth more when you already have high crit chance, and adding crit chance is worth more when you already have high crit damage. In organized trial groups, crit damage is often pushed to the 125% cap by group buffs like Warhorn and Elemental Catalyst, making additional crit chance more valuable. The DPS impact calculators on this page let you compare exactly how much total damage each stat adds for your specific setup.
